One Netflix title has taken the world by storm, being noticed for its incredible animation, soundtrack, and story. It has also brought the spotlight back to the Korean content, including dramas, films, and music, across streaming platforms like Netflix and Spotify.
K-Pop Demon Hunters has beaten several records, including becoming Netflix’s most-watched original animated film of all time, and in August, surpassing Red Notice’s record to become the most-watched Netflix film. In September, it crossed 266 million views, officially becoming Netflix’s most-watched title. If you liked this film, here are some K-dramas on Netflix to stream.
The shows on this list have been picked for their resemblance to K-pop Demon Hunters in terms of themes, plot, and storytelling points. While they may not resemble the film in every aspect, they are good additions to your Netflix watchlist if you want to delve into K-content.
The Uncanny Counter
K-Pop Demon Hunters is as much about demons (and demon hunting) as it is about the glamorous idol life and group rivalry. The Uncanny Counter is a South Korean thriller series about demon hunting that you’ll enjoy if you’re looking for adventure and action with a dose of paranormal sub-themes. Based on a webtoon, The Uncanny Counter tells the story of a high school student with a physical disability who joins the Counters, a group of demon hunters searching for paranormal spirits that have possessed bloodthirsty humans. A Counter spirit possesses the student, and he replaces the fourth member of the group, gaining supernatural powers in the process.
The Uncanny Counter features performances from Jo Byeong-kyu (Idol), Kim Sejeong (Business Proposal), and Kim Hieora (The Glory). The show has some solid writing, acting, and fast pacing that’ll have you hooked on the story beyond the gripping action sequences and fights.
My Demon
Another K-drama to check out if demons posing as humans is your cup of tea is My Demon. This popular romance series highlights the love story between the rich heiress of a conglomerate and a demon living as a human after losing his powers. The two sign a marriage contract for their mutual benefit, agreeing to help each other’s interests. In the process, they fall in love, but face the obstacles that come with their unconventional union.
My Demon grabbed five South Korean film awards for the main cast’s performances, and has a soundtrack you don’t want to miss out on. From the get-go, it has a pretty captivating plot and a complete storyline done well within its 16-episode run. The lead actors, Song Kang (Sweet Home) and Kim Yoo-jung (Love in the Moonlight), portray the rocky romance journey with heavy chemistry.
Celebrity
Celebrity is a thriller series that explores the lives of social media influencers who are catapulted to fame and how they deal with the problems that come with it. The show focuses on Seo Ah-ri (Squid Game’s Park Gyu-young), who becomes an overnight sensation after her posts take off on Instagram. She finds herself in the cutthroat influencer world, facing off against a rival former friend. As Ah-ri’s fame rises and falls, she exposes the dark secrets of this shiny world, from scams and drugs to death.
Celebrity’s plot is a breath of fresh air, and the show, led by powerful performances, does a good job of exploring the dark side of fame. The consequences of obsessing over wealth and fame are also explored in the show.
Hotel Del Luna
One of the most viewed and highly rated South Korean series of all time, Hotel del Luna is a dark fantasy show that is addictive from start to finish. Starring Lee Ji-eun/solo artist IU (When Life Gives You Tangerines) and Yeo Jin-goo (Beyond Evil), the story revolves around a supernatural guest house that has an odd characteristic: it is not visible during the day, and only some humans can actually come across it. The staff is composed of ghosts and people who are yet to move on to the afterlife, with the owner (played by IU) being bound to Hotel del Luna due to her past.
The plot kicks off when Gu Chan-sung, the son of a man who made a pact with del Luna’s owner, takes on the role of general manager at the eccentric guest house. The mysteries behind the place unravel, as do those of the owner. After the show’s success, two adaptations, including a stage musical (premiered in 2022) and an American remake (in development), were announced.
Business Proposal
Ahn Hyo-seop, who voices the lead character Jinu in K-Pop Demon Hunters, is not new to the acting (or the K-pop) scene. After debuting as a boy group idol (One O One), he took on the lead role in Business Proposal, one of the most popular K-dramas on Netflix.
This romcom series revolves around Shin Ha-ri (Gugudan’s former member Kim Se-jeong), who takes the place of her friend during a blind date, only to find out that her date is her company’s CEO, Kang Tae-moo (Ahn Hyo-seop). Tae-moo wants to get married so he can get his grandfather off his back, unaware of Ha-ri’s assumed identity and her status as his employee. Hilarity ensues, with Ha-ri being conflicted about accepting his proposal. Meanwhile, Ha-ri’s friend, who was the original blind date, finds herself drawn to Tae-moo’s secretary.
Business Proposal won seven South Korean acting awards, including for the lead cast’s acting and soundtrack.
The King: Eternal Monarch
For a story filled with parallel worlds, high-stakes assassinations, and a good dose of romance, try The King: Eternal Monarch. This fantasy series, which encompasses two alternative realities, sees Lee Gon (Boys Over Flowers’ Lee Min-ho) as the emperor of the modern-day Kingdom of Corea. He crosses over to another reality where the Republic of Korea exists, through a portal opened by his half-uncle, who also assassinated Gon’s father. Gon sets out to find his uncle and take revenge, meeting a detective from his childhood in the process.
Alchemy of Souls
Another supernatural show with high-paced action scenes and a gripping plot is Alchemy of Souls, a romance adventure series divided into two parts. The story is about young mages and their twisted fates, courtesy of a magic spell known as Alchemy of Souls, which lets them switch bodies.
A powerful sorceress is trapped in the body of a blind woman, and she meets a man from a powerful family. The two fall in love as she learns her skills. Meanwhile, forces at play come in the way of their peace, with the supernatural elements of their powers and the spell being a central focus.
Alchemy of Souls won six South Korean film awards and was a highly streamed Korean title on Netflix across countries.
Doona!
Doona! is a romance series based on the webtoon The Girl Downstairs, and portrays the love story between a college student and a retired K-pop idol. The show stars Bae Suzy, a former member of the K-pop girl group Miss A, as Doona, an idol who has left behind her glamorous days in the industry as a member of Dream Sweet.
Doona and the student, who had a crush on her during his high school days, become roommates, and both crave normal lives. Suzy plays a complex Doona, portraying her flaws and aspirations expertly. If the low-key romance aspects of K-Pop Demon Hunters fascinated you, then Doona! is a must-watch.
If you want to explore more K-content on Netflix, you can make use of the platform’s secret codes to filter out Korean titles (67879 for Korean TV shows and 5685 for Korean movies). Netflix also hosts a few K-pop idol group documentaries (Blackpink) and related titles that you may be into if you liked K-Pop Demon Hunters.
