The Book News We Covered This Week

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. Here are the stories we covered ourselves on Book Riot this week.

December’s selections offer plenty of interesting choices, from a narrative nonfiction book that had a super popular adaptation to a romance with rich family history. There’s also a contemporary novel about obsession, a multi-generational family novel chosen by many book clubs this year, a fascinating historical novel based on the real Tipu’s Tiger, a novella/short story collection centering transness, a Jane Austen novel, and more! It’s a great time to settle in with a good read.

It regularly surprises people to learn that America’s history includes a period of time when books were burned. The surprise comes in part because there’s a lack of knowledge about how book censorship has been fundamental in American history and in part because the American government spent a lot of time, money, and energy delivering propaganda during World War II about Nazi book burnings that was intended to drum up patriotism. Americans wouldn’t burn books like Nazis would, would they?

And for All Access members, here are all the interesting links we bookmarked that didn’t make the cut for full Today in Books coverage.
